Which Pokémon set should you buy in 2026?

In 2026, there is no single "best" Pokémon set, but there is a set to suit every profile. To get started, we recommend ME01 Mega Evolution or the latest one, Pitch Black (ME05). Charizard fans will go for Phantasmal Flames, nostalgia lovers for the 30th Anniversary set and Japanese collectors for the MEGA series. Here is our reasoning, profile by profile.

The Pokémon landscape in 2026

The year is dominated by the Mega Evolution block, with a new French-language set roughly every two months:

  • Ascended Heroes (ME02.5) on 30 January;
  • Perfect Order (ME03) on 27 March;
  • Chaos Rising (ME04) on 22 May;
  • Pitch Black (ME05) on 17 July;
  • the 30th Anniversary set in September;
  • Delta Reign (ME06), scheduled for 6 November.

Add to that ME01 and ME02, released in late 2025, and the whole Japanese MEGA series. The choice is wide: which is exactly why it is best to start from what you enjoy.

You're a beginner: start with the basics

ME01 Mega Evolution is the natural gateway to the block. It is the block's largest main set (132 cards in the main list) and features the two iconic Mega ex, Mega Gardevoir and Mega Lucario. Its Elite Trainer Box, available in a version for each of them, contains everything you need to store your cards and play.

If you would rather keep up with the latest releases, Pitch Black (ME05) and its 6-pack Booster Bundle are a good alternative. Our guide to getting started with the Pokémon TCG rounds off this advice.

You're a Charizard fan

Good news: the block gives it pride of place.

  • Phantasmal Flames (ME02) stars Mega Charizard X ex.
  • Ascended Heroes (ME02.5) includes Mega Charizard Y ex among its many Mega ex.
  • In Japanese, Inferno X (M2) is the original version of ME02.

You love nostalgia and showpieces

The 30th Anniversary set, released in September 2026, celebrates the game's thirty years and comes in many boxes (Espeon, Umbreon, Eevee, Sylveon, Greninja…). It appeals as much to former players as to collectors who love "event" products. Everything is explained in our 30th Anniversary guide and in the 30th anniversary collection.

You collect in Japanese

The Japanese MEGA series has plenty going for it. MEGA Dream ex (M2a), a 250-card "high class" set, offers a broad overview of the Mega ex with a dedicated illustration style. Storm Emeralda (M6), released on 31 July 2026, lets you discover Mega Rayquaza ex months before the French version. And the 30th Celebration set (M6a) is also available in Japanese. To find your way around, see our MEGA series guide.

You want to keep up with the latest news

Stick with the latest main set, Pitch Black, led by Mega Darkrai ex, and get ready for the next one: Delta Reign, built around Mega Rayquaza ex. Our Pitch Black and Delta Reign guides give you the full picture, and the release calendar helps you plan ahead.

And if you like keeping sealed product, choose products you genuinely love first: nobody can predict how a set will perform. Our guide on sealed products talks about this frankly.
