Base Set Charizard: its return in the 30th Celebration set
Yes, the Base Set Charizard really is back: it's part of the Classic Collection in the 30th Celebration set, a selection of thirty iconic cards reprinted with a new foil finish and a Pikachu "30" stamp. It isn't the 1999 original, but a commemorative reprint that's easy to recognise. Here's where to look for it and what you need to know before you start.
The card that started the legend
The holographic Base Set Charizard, numbered 4/102 and illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, is probably the most famous card in Pokémon TCG history. For a whole generation of players, it was the card everyone dreamed of pulling from a booster in the playground. So it was almost inevitable that it would feature in the thirtieth-anniversary celebrations.
The Pokémon Company showcased it from the very first announcements of the set, alongside Pikachu and Zekrom-GX (Sun & Moon – Team Up), as one of the headliners of the Classic Collection.
The Classic Collection in brief
The Classic Collection brings together thirty standout cards from the last three decades, from the Base Set Pikachu and Charizard to much more recent cards. They're reprinted with:
- a new foil finish, different from the original holo;
- a Pikachu stamp whose silhouette forms the number "30";
- their original artwork and text, which gives them that very special retro charm.
As for numbering, the international version keeps the original number (Charizard keeps its 4/102), while the Japanese 30th Celebration version (M6a) adds these thirty cards at the end of the set: Charizard is numbered 137/103 there.
Where to find this Charizard
In French, the most direct route is the Classic Collection booster. According to the official announcement, it contains three Classic Collection cards and is included in the 30th Celebration Day and Night Ultra-Premium Collections, alongside 29 30th Celebration boosters. Both boxes are announced for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Bear in mind that three cards out of thirty obviously doesn't guarantee Charizard: think of it as a chance, not a certainty. In Japanese, the Classic Collection is an integral part of the M6a set list.

Original or reprint: how to tell them apart
There's no room for confusion if you know where to look.
| Feature | Original (Base Set) | 30th Celebration reprint |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp | No Pikachu stamp | Pikachu stamp forming "30" |
| Finish | Vintage holo on the artwork | New foil finish |
| Number (Japanese version) | No number on vintage Japanese cards | 137/103 in M6a |
| Tournament use | Formats that allow older cards | Not legal in Standard |
This matters if you're buying a single card: a reprint should never be passed off as an original. If in doubt, ask for sharp photos of the stamp and the front.
Can you play this card?
According to The Pokémon Company, Classic Collection cards aren't legal in the Standard format. They can still be used in formats that accept the original printings of these cards. In other words, this Charizard is first and foremost a collector's piece and a nod to the game's early days.
Keeping it in good condition
A foil card like this deserves immediate protection: a sleeve as soon as it comes out of the booster, then a toploader or rigid holder. If you're thinking of having it assessed, see our guide getting your Pokémon cards graded, and our accessories page for protective gear.
FAQ
Is the reprinted Charizard in regular 30th Celebration boosters?
The official French announcement highlights the Classic Collection booster in the Ultra-Premium Collections, which contains three Classic Collection cards. That's the officially identified way to chase these cards in French.
Why does the number differ between Japanese and French?
The international version uses the original number (4/102), whereas the Japanese M6a version numbers the Classic Collection at the end of the set (137/103).
Could the reprint be mistaken for the 1999 original?
Not if you look at the Pikachu "30" stamp and the foil finish, which are unique to the reprint. Be wary of vague listings that don't show these details.
