Pokémon or One Piece: which card game to collect in 2026?

If you love a long history, nostalgia and a huge choice of products, go for Pokémon; if you prefer a younger game, a manga universe and a collection that is still "manageable", One Piece is an excellent choice. The two are not mutually exclusive, and many of our customers follow both. Here are the practical differences so you can choose with full knowledge of the facts.

Two very different histories

The Pokémon TCG was born in Japan in 1996 and celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, with a dedicated anniversary set. It is a monument: thousands of cards, generations of collectors, vintage cards that have become legendary. Bandai's One Piece Card Game is much more recent: it launched in Japan in 2022, and its French version has only existed since early 2025. In practice, this means that with One Piece it is still realistic to follow almost the whole range from the start, whereas with Pokémon you inevitably have to pick an era or a theme.

The release pace in 2026

On the Pokémon side, the year is driven by the Mega Evolution block (Pitch Black, released in July 2026, then Delta Reign, scheduled for 6 November 2026) and above all by the 30th Anniversary set in September, accompanied by a very wide range of boxes. On the One Piece side, Bandai releases a main booster roughly every three months (OP-16 in June, OP-17 in August, OP-18 in November for English and French), supplemented by Extra Boosters such as EB-05 in October. Either way, there is plenty going on: better to set yourself a focus than to buy everything.

For details, see our One Piece calendar and our guide to the Mega Evolution block.

Pokémon offers many more ways into a set, which is ideal for a gift or a small budget. One Piece focuses more on the booster pack and the booster box, with fewer variations.

The universe and the audience

Pokémon speaks to everyone, from children discovering the game to adults who grew up with the Game Boy. The artwork is varied, often gentle, sometimes spectacular. One Piece is aimed first and foremost at fans of Eiichiro Oda's manga: the cards follow the story arcs (Elbaph, Water Seven, the Emperors…), and the Super Parallels reproduce panels straight from the manga. If you, or the person you are buying for, read One Piece, the attachment to the cards will be immediate.

Playing or collecting?

Both games have a real competitive scene. Pokémon has a very well-established official tournament network and a well-honed format for newcomers. The One Piece Card Game, for its part, is often appreciated for its tactical games built around a Leader and DON!! cards. For a pure player, the best choice is the one their friends or local shop play.

For sealed collectors, we make no promises about value: no product is guaranteed to increase in value, whatever the game. Collect what you enjoy first.

Our advice by profile

  • Nostalgic for the 2000s: Pokémon, and especially the 30th Anniversary set, which pays tribute to the game's entire history.
  • Manga fan: One Piece, starting with a recent main booster such as OP-17.
  • Parent of a young player: the game the child already knows; in both cases, choose French and a starter deck.
  • Collector who loves Japanese products: both ranges exist in Japanese, with shorter packs (5 cards for Pokémon, 6 for One Piece).

Frequently asked questions

Can you collect both at the same time?

Of course. The simplest approach is to set a focus for each game, for example a favourite Pokémon set and the main One Piece boosters, so you don't spread yourself too thin.

Which game is easier for a beginner?

Both offer starter decks designed for learning. Pokémon has the advantage of being better known; One Piece is very easy to follow if you already know the characters.

Have One Piece cards been available in French from the start?

No. The French edition started in early 2025 with OP-09. Older series exist in English and Japanese.

Which one will gain the most value?

Nobody can guarantee that, and we do not promise it. Buy what you want to open or display.
