Getting started with the Pokémon TCG in 2026: first-purchase guide
For a first Pokémon purchase, we recommend a battle deck if you want to play, and an Elite Trainer Box (ETB) or a small booster pack if you mostly want to open cards. The booster box comes later, once you know what you like. This guide helps you choose the right product, the right set and the essential accessories, without getting lost among the dozens of products currently on offer.
First question: playing, collecting or gifting?
There are three ways to enjoy the Pokémon TCG, and the right first purchase depends on yours:
- Playing: you need a coherent 60-card deck you can use straight away. A preconstructed deck is the easiest way to learn the rules.
- Collecting: you want to open boosters, discover the artwork and chase a few rare cards. A product with several boosters and some storage is ideal.
- Gifting: the packaging matters. A box with a promo card or a figure often makes more of an impression than a single booster.
Products suited to a beginner
| Product | What it contains | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|
| Battle deck | A ready-to-play 60-card deck built around a Pokémon ex | Learning to play |
| 3-booster pack / blister | A few 10-card boosters, sometimes with a promo card | Trying out a set, a small gift |
| Elite Trainer Box (ETB) | 9 boosters for recent main sets, 65 card sleeves, Energy cards, dice, a guide and a storage box | The best "first box" for collecting and starting to play |
| Booster Bundle | 6 boosters, no accessories | Opening a bit more, with less bulk |
| Booster box | 36 sealed French boosters | Collectors who are already hooked |
The ETB remains our most frequent recommendation for a beginner: it contains everything you need to open, store and protect your first cards. For a detailed comparison, read booster box or ETB: which to choose.
Which set to choose in 2026?
In French, the current focus is the Mega Evolution series:
- Pitch Black (ME05), released on 17 July 2026, with Mega Darkrai ex in the spotlight;
- 30th Celebration, released in September 2026, a special set celebrating the game's 30 years, available in collection boxes, ETBs, Booster Bundles and tins;
- Delta Reign (ME06), announced for 6 November 2026, with Mega Rayquaza ex.
Our advice: choose the set whose Pokémon you like. A beginner who loves Darkrai will have more fun with Pitch Black than with a "trendy" set that doesn't speak to them. To get the full picture, see our guide which Pokémon set to buy in 2026 and the 30th Celebration page.
French, Japanese or Chinese?
For beginners, French is the natural choice: you can read the attacks, you learn quickly, and the cards can be used in tournaments in your region. Japanese products appeal to collectors with their 5-card boosters and earlier releases, but the text isn't readable for most of us. Official Chinese products have their own sets, popular with seasoned collectors. More details in French or English cards and Japanese or French booster box.
Accessories to get from the start
The most beautiful cards get damaged quickly if handled without protection. At the very least, plan for:
- Card sleeves for the cards you play or love;
- A pocket binder to store your collection flat;
- Toploaders for your best cards.
Our sleeves and binder guides will help you choose, and the accessories section has all the essentials.
Classic mistakes to avoid
- Buying a booster box on day one without knowing whether you enjoy opening boosters.
- Buying single boosters "at random" from several sets: you end up with scattered cards that can't be played together.
- Ignoring where products come from: buy sealed products from reputable sellers and learn to spot counterfeits with our anti-fake checklist.
- Forgetting to protect cards as soon as you open them.

Frequently asked questions
How many cards are in a French Pokémon booster?
10 cards in boosters from current sets. Standard Japanese boosters contain 5.
Is an ETB enough to start playing?
It provides boosters, Energy cards and accessories, but not a constructed deck. To play straight away, add a battle deck.
What product should I give an 8-year-old?
A French-language battle deck to learn to play, or a box with a promo card if they mostly love the artwork.
Should I keep my products sealed?
It's a personal choice. Opening is part of the fun; keeping things sealed is another form of collecting. Neither option is guaranteed to increase in value.
