Pokémon market: what collectors are looking for in 2026
In 2026, Pokémon collectors' interest is focused on a few major themes: the franchise's 30th anniversary, the return of Mega Evolutions, full-art illustration cards and editions from Asia. These are trends in taste and demand, visible in shops and in the community, not price forecasts. Here is what we are seeing, and what to take from it with caution.
The 30th anniversary, the event of the year
Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, the first games having been released in Japan in February 1996. To mark the occasion, The Pokémon Company announced the 30th Celebration set on 1 June 2026, released on 16 September 2026. It is the first TCG set launched simultaneously worldwide, instead of the usual gap between Japan and the West.
Its features were designed with collectors in mind: every card is holo, a new rarity called "Futuristic Rare" makes its debut, classic cards return, and each booster pack contains one of 30 specially illustrated Pikachu cards. Our guides 30th Anniversary set and The 30 Pikachu go into the details.
The Mega Evolution block
Since 2025, the Mega Evolution block has replaced Scarlet & Violet and brought Mega Evolutions back into the spotlight. Mega-evolved Pokémon, much loved by fans of the sixth-generation video games, have rekindled the interest of many collectors who have returned to the game. Sets follow one another in French, and the Japanese editions of the MEGA series generally come first. Find all the releases in our guide The Mega Evolution block.
Illustration cards, the heart of modern collecting
Since Scarlet & Violet, the "Illustration Rare" and "Special Illustration Rare" rarities have showcased full-card illustrations, often telling a story. They are now among the most sought-after cards in a set, far more than ordinary playing cards. This weighs on the choice of sets: collectors look at the list of illustration cards before deciding which booster box to open.
Iconic Pokémon remain a constant driver: Pikachu, Charizard, Eevee and its evolutions, Mew and Gengar draw attention with every new card. Themed sub-series built around these Pokémon, such as 151 or Prismatic Evolutions in their day, have been very successful.
The appeal of Japanese and Chinese editions
Japanese booster boxes appeal thanks to their compact format, recognised print quality and the chance to discover sets before their French release. Japanese "High Class Packs", which gather the best cards from a period, are particularly sought after.
More recently, Simplified Chinese editions, officially printed for mainland China, have attracted international attention. The "Gem Packs", developed specifically for that market, stand out for their exclusive artwork and holographic finishes. Our guide Chinese Pokémon cards explains how to tell them apart from counterfeits. You can browse our products by language: Japanese, Chinese or French.
A larger, more organised community
The audience has grown: former fans returning to collecting, new players who arrived notably via the Pokémon TCG Pocket app launched in late 2024, sealed collectors, graded-card enthusiasts. This increased demand has had visible effects: sell-outs at release, tight pre-orders and, in response, reprints announced by The Pokémon Company. In Japan, the publisher now restricts certain high-demand online purchases to verified residents, in order to limit speculative reselling.
Another underlying trend: the care taken over storage. Card sleeves, toploaders, binders and rigid cases for sealed products have become widespread. See our accessories.
What these trends don't tell you
A trend in taste is not a guarantee. This guide is general information, not financial advice: today's interest can fade, a popular set can be widely reprinted, and a series' past success says nothing about the next one. We are a retailer and therefore have an interest in you buying: take our observations for what they are, and buy what you like first. For an analysis of the risks, read our honest guide to investing in sealed products.
FAQ
What is the most sought-after set right now?
In autumn 2026, the 30th Celebration set is naturally attracting the most attention. But demand changes quickly: it is best to follow the news and our set guides.
Are Japanese cards more sought after than French ones?
They attract a different audience, notably for their format and earlier release. French editions keep their own fans, particularly for playing and local collecting.
Are Chinese cards official?
Simplified Chinese editions published for mainland China are official. You still need to stay alert to counterfeits, which are common in this segment.
Should you follow trends when buying?
Not necessarily. Trends help you understand the market, but a collection you enjoy is still the best basis for choosing.
