Which accessories to protect your Pokémon collection?
To protect a Pokémon collection, five accessories cover almost every need: sleeves for every card, toploaders for valuable cards, binders for storing and browsing, deck boxes for carrying a deck, and acrylic cases for sealed products. The right kit depends mainly on what you do with your cards: play, collect or keep things sealed.
Sleeves: the foundation of everything
A sleeve is a plastic pocket fitted to the card. It's the first line of protection, keeping scratches, dust and fingerprints away. For Pokémon cards, whether French or Japanese, choose the standard size (66 × 91 mm), or a 64 × 89 mm inner sleeve for double sleeving. Watch out for the so-called "Japanese" size (62 × 89 mm): it's designed for other games, and your Pokémon cards won't fit.
Go for PVC-free, acid-free sleeves, such as those in the Ultra PRO and Gamegenic ranges. Everything is explained in our sleeves guide.
Toploaders: for the cards that matter
A toploader is a rigid holder that opens at the top. It stops the card from bending and protects it during trades, storage and shipping. For a standard Pokémon card, the 35pt model is the most common, with the card placed in a soft sleeve first.
We recommend one for every rare card you pull from a booster, and of course for anything you post. For thicknesses and shipping methods, read our toploader guide.
Binders: store, sort, admire
The binder is the collector's tool: it lets you track a set, complete a Pokédex or admire your favourite artwork. The criteria to keep in mind:
- 9 pockets per page, the most versatile format;
- side loading, so cards don't fall out;
- PVC-free pages, for long-term preservation;
- a zip closure, if the binder leaves the house.
Portfolio or ring binder, capacity, 4- or 12-pocket formats: our binder guide will help you decide.
Deck boxes: for players
If you play, a deck box is essential. It keeps your sleeved deck together and safe from knocks in a bag. Choose the capacity based on sleeved cards, not bare ones: a 60-card deck in double sleeves takes up considerably more space. Some extra room also lets you add markers, dice and a few spare cards. At Gamegenic, for example, the number in the name refers to double-sleeved cards: the Deck Holder 80+ holds up to 80 double-sleeved cards.

Acrylic cases: for sealed products
A booster box, an ETB or a premium collection kept sealed deserves protection too. An acrylic case wraps the box in a rigid, transparent shell: no more dented corners or dust, and a great display piece. The key point is choosing the model that fits the product's exact format, because a Japanese booster box doesn't have the same dimensions as a French one.
Thickness, UV filter, magnetic closure, how to measure: it's all in our acrylic case guide. For storage in general, see also Protecting and storing sealed Pokémon products.

The trap to avoid: getting the size wrong
The most common mistake isn't choosing an accessory that's "too basic", it's getting the size wrong: sleeves that are too small, a toploader that's too thick or a display case that doesn't match the box. Before ordering, always check the dimensions listed on the product page.

Frequently asked questions
Which accessory should I start with?
Sleeves. They protect every card day to day and are needed before a toploader, a binder or grading.
Do Pokémon accessories work for One Piece cards?
Yes. One Piece cards share the same standard size as Pokémon cards: same sleeves, same toploaders, same binders.
Do I need branded accessories?
It's not essential, but the big brands clearly state their materials (PVC-free, acid-free) and dimensions. That's a real guarantee for a valuable collection.
