Pokémon acrylic cases: choosing and measuring the right one

An acrylic case is a rigid, transparent display case cut for a specific sealed product: booster display, Elite Trainer Box (ETB) or Ultra-Premium Collection (UPC). To choose well, you first need a model that fits the exact format of your box, then look at the wall thickness, whether it has a UV filter and how it closes. An acrylic case that is too big or too small offers poor protection, however good its quality.

Why an acrylic case?

The original shrink-wrap protects the product, but not the cardboard. Dented corners, scratches, dust, sun fading: on a sealed product, the condition of the box matters as much as the contents to a collector. Acrylic brings three things:

  • a rigid shell against knocks and crushing;
  • a barrier against dust, fingerprints and minor accidents;
  • a showcase: the box stays visible and can be displayed on a shelf.

A format for each product

There is no universal size. Pokémon products do not all have the same dimensions, and the same type of product can vary by language or era:

  • Booster display (booster box): the format differs between French or English displays and the more compact Japanese ones.
  • ETB: the format is fairly consistent from one set to the next, but it is worth checking for special editions.
  • UPCs and large boxes: these formats vary widely and are often specific to one product. A case designed for one UPC will not necessarily fit another.

That is why our acrylic cases are organised by product type. The name of each model states the format it is designed for.

Measure your box before choosing

If in doubt, the best method is still a tape measure, or better yet, a calliper.

  1. Measure the width, depth and height of the box, wrap included, at the widest points.
  2. Compare them with the case's internal dimensions, not its external dimensions: the wall thickness reduces the usable space.
  3. Allow a little tolerance: there should be enough room to slide the box in without forcing it, but not so much that it moves around inside.

Thickness, UV filter and closure

Wall thickness

The thickness of the acrylic affects rigidity and feel. A thin wall is enough to protect against dust in a display cabinet. A thick wall withstands knocks better, warps less and gives a more "premium" finish, at the cost of extra weight. For a product you intend to keep for a long time or move around, we recommend a thick case. The thickness of each model is shown in its name or on its product page.

UV filter: useful, but not magic

Light, and ultraviolet in particular, fades the inks on cardboard over time. Some manufacturers add an anti-UV treatment to their acrylic. Ultra PRO, for example, claims up to 66% UV protection for its acrylic Pokémon booster box display case.

Remember that a UV filter slows down fading; it does not eliminate it. Even in a treated case, avoid direct sunlight and spots behind a window. All our storage advice is in the guide Protecting and storing your sealed products.

Magnetic closure or sliding lid

  • Magnetic closure: the lid is held in place by built-in magnets. It opens easily and closes cleanly. Ultra PRO, for example, uses a two-part, top-opening design with six reinforced magnets on its Pokémon booster box display case.
  • Sliding or push-fit lid: simpler, and perfectly suited to a box you rarely open.

In both cases, check that the lid closes flat: a visible gap lets dust in.

Care and small precautions

  • Remove the protective film from the acrylic before use, if there is one.
  • Clean with a soft microfibre cloth, dry or very slightly damp. No alcohol, no ammonia-based glass cleaner and no abrasive sponge: acrylic scratches and can cloud.
  • Don't stack too many heavy cases on top of one another.

Frequently asked questions

Does an acrylic case replace the original shrink-wrap?

No, it goes on top of it. Never remove the wrap from a sealed product: it is what proves the product has not been opened.

Does the same case fit a Japanese and a French booster box?

Not necessarily; their dimensions differ. Choose the model designed for the exact format of your booster box.

Can I display an acrylic case near a window?

We advise against it, even with a UV filter. A shelf out of direct sunlight is still the best spot.
